What a Single Painted Fingernail on a Man Signifies

During a trip to Cambodia, Elliot Costello met a young girl named Thea, a meeting that would profoundly shape his life and inspire a movement dedicated to ending child sexual abuse.

Thea, a cheerful girl, was always seen with nail polish on her tiny nails. One day, as they chatted, she asked if she could paint one of Elliot’s nails. He agreed, enjoying their conversation, but then learned that she had once been a victim of sexual abuse.

“As she painted one of my nails, I promised her I would keep it that way as a reminder of her and, by extension, her suffering,” Elliot shared.

This encounter motivated Elliot to create positive change, particularly among men, to help prevent child sexual abuse. This led to the birth of the #PolishedMan movement, where men paint one of their nails to represent the one in five children who will suffer from sexual violence.

The movement’s mission is clear: end sexual violence against children. According to the organization, “being a Polished Man means challenging violent behavior and language, both locally and globally.”

Elliot believes that since men are responsible for 96% of child sexual abuse worldwide, they must lead the charge in bringing about change to end the abuse of innocent children.

The painted nail is not just a reminder of the staggering number of children affected by abuse, but also a conversation starter aimed at raising awareness and promoting prevention efforts. Elliot hopes the movement will inspire people to donate to programs that support educational resources for child survivors of abuse, as reported by APlus.

The goal is to see more men—especially celebrities—join the movement and help spread the message.
